POCATELLO, Idaho - Freshman defender Tara Bice scored the game-winning goal, the first of her career, as the Idaho State women's soccer team downed the College of Idaho 4-1 in Friday's home opener. Bice's goal, a header past the keeper off an assist from sophomore Rachel Strawn was just one of three goals scored by the Bengals in the first half. The Bengals improve to 2-1 for the season while the College of Idaho is unaffected as the game did not count for the Yotes.
The first half was an exciting one for Bengal fans as ISU attacked the goal early, scoring the first goal of the game at the 32:13 mark knocked in by sophomore Laura Perez off an assist from freshman Kiley Godfrey. The goal was Perez's third career goal and first for the season. It was ISU's first home goal as well.
ISU scored for the second time at the 23:25 mark with the Bice-Strawn connection and again at the 8:50 mark with a goal knocked in by Strawn off a corner kick from senior defender Lauren Ryan. Strawn's goal was the first off a set play this season, an achievement that took the Bengals the until their last non-conference game to accomplish.
The second half of the contest was slightly less eventful with the College of Idaho scoring its first goal of the match and the first goal of the half with approximately 22 minutes remaining in the game. The College of Idaho's Macy Egerman directed an unassisted long shot from 20 yards out just over the head of freshman goalkeeper Carly Hutchings who replaced junior keeper Bailey Williams at the half to gain additional experience with ISU up 3-0 at the break. ISU answered right back, however, with a goal by freshman Kiley Godfrey with just 2:50 left in the game. Perez was credited with the assist on the score.
"It was really important for us to get a lot of players some time today," ISU Head Coach Allison Gibson said. "Looking at the fact that the bench came in strong and really dominated the offense for us; that was a good sign and we hope we can continue that into Sunday."
Friday's victory marked the first time ISU had won its home opener since 2008 after falling to Maine 0-2 in 2009. ISU however finished the 2009 home schedule flawlessly outscoring its opponents 15-3 for the remainder of the season. The last home opener victory for the Bengals came in a 2-1 decision over Utah State with Ashley Askwig scoring the game-winning goal with 16 seconds remaining in double-overtime. Sunday's match against Utah State will be played in honor of Askwig as she is unable to continue to compete due to a heart condition.
