Bengals Battle on the Road, Fall in Three to Vikings

PORTLAND, Ore. - - Idaho State posted 28 tied scores in the three set loss to Portland State on the road Saturday night at the Stott Center. The Bengals fell 22-25, 28-30, 25-27 recording two set points in the second and saving two in the third. Junior Jaclyn Hone posted her seventh double-double of the season with 10 kills and 12 digs while freshman setter Lori Mendenhall recorded her sixth with 37 assists and 14 digs.

The Bengals fell to 8-6 and 1-3 in league action, while Portland State improved their undefeated Big Sky start to 4-0 and jumped up to 8-6 for the season.

Portland State maintained the lead for the majority of the first set that ISU was able to cut to a one point lead late in the set before falling by three. In the second, ISU fell behind by three before gaining the lead to hold two set points. ISU pushed the match to the highest point total needed to overcome the Bengals in a set where ISU fell 28-30. The Bengals had 11 tied scores in the second set and 14 in the third.

Idaho State struggled to contain PSU's outside hitter Whitney Phillips who notched a match-high 20 kills while hitting a .295 attack percentage. She also posted a match-high five service aces, seven digs and four block assists. Viking Cara Olden posted a match-high .700 hitting percentage with seven kills from 10 attempts and zero errors.

Libero's Diana Villalpando of the Vikings and ISU's Jenna Proost each notched the match-high 18 digs. The Bengals had two players who were each one kill shy of a double-figure with outside hitters Jennika Wright and Haylee Thompson-Brock. Thompson-Brock had led the Bengals in the last four matches, but was cut short by the Viking front row.

Portland State out-blocked Idaho State 10-to-7.5, with PSU's Lana Zielke posting a match-high seven. Three Bengals posted three block assists produced by Wright, Hone and senior middle blocker Sarah Carson.

The Bengals will return home to Reed Gym to host the Montana's next weekend. Idaho State will host Montana on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. then Montana State on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
