POCATELLO, Idaho - Sophomore Ashley Jones scored Idaho State's lone goal at the 14:44 mark to tie the contest, but it would not be enough as Idaho responded with its second goal of the period that would last the game for a 2-1 victory over the Bengals in the second contest of the Governor's Cup on Friday afternoon at Davis Field. The Vandals improve to 2-2-0 while Idaho State fell to 2-2-1 for the season, marking the Bengals' first loss to a non-ranked opponent.
"I don't think we played with the heart that this team can play with, which is what I was most frustrated about," said Head Coach Gibson of her reaction to the contest. "They weren't willing to fight for each other. When a ball bounces five times in the box for 30 seconds without getting a foot on it that's unacceptable and is what I was fired up about. We did a good job of making some adjustments, scrambling to get in the right positions and I'm happy with that. Overall we needed more heart."
The Vandals started off strong posting their first goal of the game at the 10:37 mark when midfielder Megan Lopez, sophomore, collected the ball off a cross from Jill Flockhart and placed the ball with pin-point accuracy in the top left corner 20 yards out, just past ISU's keeper Bailey Williams. There was nothing Williams, who stands at 5-4, could have done. The goal was Lopez's second of the season.
Idaho State turned around and tied the game four minutes and seven seconds later when midfielder Ashley Jones, 2009 Big Sky Newcomer of the Year, parked a clean ball over Idaho's keeper Boyden's head 35 yards out to tie the contest. However,
Idaho wasn't about to give up responding 8:12 later with an unassisted goal from forward Chelsea Small, a sophomore, who scored her second goal of the season by making a run through the box to Williams before beating her to place the ball in past her to the right.
Both teams were held scoreless in the second period handing Idaho the first win of the Governor's Cup matches that count toward the title. Only Idaho State, Idaho and Boise State are eligible to compete to win the Governor's Cup. Idaho State last hosted the Governor's Cup in 2007 when the Bengals captured its second straight Governor's Cup title, putting their total up to five, for the most titles among Governor's Cup participants.
Both teams posted 14 shots, but the Vandals edged out the Bengals 2-to-1 for shots on goal, ISU posting five. Vandal Small led the contest with seven shots as well as posting a game-high six shots on goal. Freshman Allyson Stainbrook recorded two shots, both on goal.
Freshman forward Andrea Beseris came close to turning the tables when she hit the crossbar in her shot attempt with 1:47 remaining in the first period. Idaho State did have its aggressive moments notching four corner kicks while holding Idaho to zero.
The Bengals will continue their run in the Governor's Cup on Sunday, September 5 at 2 p.m. against the Broncos of Boise State at Davis Field. The University of Idaho will play Utah Valley in their Governor's Cup's filler match on Sunday, September 5 at 11 a.m. Utah Valley is competing in the Governor's Cup to provide added competition as Idaho and Boise State's matchup will occur on Sunday, October 24 in Boise at 1 p.m. when they meet up during their Western Athletic Conference regular season game.
