PROVO, Utah - Idaho State captured its fourth-straight victory to open the season remaining undefeated with a 3-1 (26-28, 25-23, 25-22, 25-23) victory over Cal Poly Friday afternoon at the Brigham Young Nike Tournament held at the Smithfieldhouse. Idaho State's 4-0 start in 15 years since the program opened the 1995 season with four straight victories. Cal Poly fell to 2-2 for the season.
Four Bengals notched double-figure kills with freshman Jennika Wright, junior Jaclyn Hone and senior Sarah Carson each posting a game-high 12 kills. Senior right side hitter Britta Bartschi-Rhodehouse recorded 11 kills from 26 attacks and three errors for a .308 percentage. Outside hitter Wright led Bengal attackers with a .429 attack percentage.
Idaho State's hitting percentage has remained outstanding with the team posting a .302 hitting percentage against Cal Poly improving their season stats to .295 for the season. Cal Poly was held to a .193 attack percentage with ISU's tough defense that put up 10 team blocks for the second time this season.
Junior Hone recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs, her second of the season and 16th of her career. Senior libero Jenna Proost recorded 16 digs for the Bengals, a game-high. She is on a three-match double-figure dig streak. Senior middle blocker Carson posted 12 kills with a .370 attack percentage, a career-high three service aces, and four block assists.
Idaho State fell behind Cal Poly in the first set taking the contest into extra points before the Mustangs pulled out a 28-26 set. Cal Poly posted their best attack percentage in the first set, .306, before the Bengals improved its efforts taking Cal Poly's average down each set until they were hitting a .083 attack percentage in the fourth set.
Idaho State will have undoubtedly its toughest competition for the year in back-to-back matches on Saturday. Idaho State will be playing Brigham Young in which the Bengals have only upset once in 1989 in the only five set match played between the teams. The Bengals will play Brigham Young at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 4 and will face #7 Nebraska at 5 p.m. in Provo, UT at the Smithfieldhouse.
