Busma Nets Career High, Bengals Fall to Portland State

POCATELLO, Idaho- Despite a career-high 22 points from Deividas Busma, the Idaho State men's basketball team lost to Portland State, 79-72 on Sunday afternoon at ICCU Court in Holt Arena. The loss drops the Bengals to 5-9 and 1-1 in Big Sky play while Portland State improved to 8-6 and 1-1 in league.

This is the third straight double-double for Busma, who had 11 rebounds to go along with his 9-of-15 shooting.

“David has been a picture of consistency for us this year to the point teams are doing what they can to take him out of the mix,” Idaho State coach Joe O'Brien said. “He still continues to produce. He had another double-double.”

Chase Grabau also had a career-high 14 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Freshman Andre Hatchett had 10 points off the bench while playing a career-high 25 minutes. The Bengal freshman scored six first half points.  

“He had a really good first half,” O'Brien said. “He is going to get a lot of quality minutes coming up here real soon. He may be a starter by next Thursday. He plays with a lot of confidence. He is kind of a bright spot for us right now.”

Idaho State shot 45 percent from the floor and out rebounded the Vikings 37-20 with Busma leading the way with 11.

Portland State shot 52.9 percent from the floor and hit 14-of-25 from the 3-point line.

Idaho State's last lead of the game was 15-14 with 7:48 left in the first half after a layup by Mike Lacey. Portland State then went on a 12-2 run to lead 26-17 with 2:53 left in the period.  The Vikings led 31-23 at halftime.

Portland State led the entire second half and by as many as 12 points four minute into the final period. ISU got within four points with six minutes to play but that would be as close as the Bengals got.
