POCATELLO, Idaho- A last second 3-pointer by
Broderick Gilchrest was blocked and the first-place Northern Colorado Bears beat Idaho State 77-74 on Monday evening at ICCU Court at Holt Arena. The loss drops Idaho State to 9-19 and 4-11 in conference and eliminates them from contention for the conference tournament. Northern Colorado is now 18-10 and 12-3 in league.
On Senior Night,
Broderick Gilchrest scored 26 points in his final home game on 10-for-23 shooting and 39 minutes of play.
Chase Grabau scored 13 points and had five rebounds and four assists while
Deividas Busma had 10 points and eight rebounds in his final home game.
Abner Moreira had eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Bengals shot 37 percent from the field and out rebounded Northern Colorado 37-34. ISU had only eight turnovers and shot 78.6 percent from the free throw line.
During the 40 minutes the game was tied nine times and had 11 lead changes.
“That's a championship team,” Idaho State coach Joe O'Brien said on Northern Colorado. “We haven't been very luck and we do have some short comings. We don't have enough people on the floor that can score at enough positions and that is a priority this spring in recruiting as well as replacing the four seniors.”
The Bengals led 64-60 with nine minutes left in the game. The Bears then tied the game at 64 with 7:52 and then with the scored tied at 66 a minute later Northern Colorado took the lead for good and maintained a lead no bigger than four points the rest of the way.
Idaho State was down by five points at 77-72 with 1:03 to play when Gilchrest hit a jumper with 42 seconds remaining to bring ISU within three points. Northern Colorado turned the ball over with 10 seconds left in the game but Chris Kaba blocked Gilchrest 3-pointer to give Northern Colorado the win.
Idaho State closes out the season on Wednesday at Montana State at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on 930 KSEI.
