Bengals Split Twin Bill at San Jose State

ISU won game 2, 7-4.

The Idaho State softball team split a double header at San Jose State on Tuesday afternoon, winning the second game, 7-4 and falling 4-3 game 1. The Bengals are now 6-18 and plays at Pacific Wednesday evening at 5 p.m.

“It was nice to get a win and get that monkey off our back,” Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. “We will continue to focus on closing the door and winning the tight one. I was pleased with our offensive production. We must build on that.”

In the 7-4 win, the Bengals pounded out a season-best 12 hits and on the day ISU combined for 18 hits and hit .346.

Amanda Fitzsimmons led the attack with four hits including a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored. Brittany Olsin, Terah Blackwell and Christina Rayner each had three hits while Rayner also had three RBIs. Courtney Hancock and Katee Wiley each had two hits while Desirae Hoffman also had a hit.

Rayner earned the win in game 2 as she pitched 4.1 innings, allowing five hits, four runs with only two being earned. Kandis Clesson took the loss in the first game as she scattered eight hits, striking out two and only giving up two earned runs.

The Bengals scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Fitzsimmons led off with an infield single and Olsin then walked. After a sacrifice bunt by Jessica Baca, Rayner smacked a two-RBI double to put ISU on top 2-0.

The Spartans scored a run in the bottom of the first and tied it at two in the bottom of the fourth inning.

ISU took a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh when it loaded the bases with no outs. Rayner would score Fitzsimmons on a ground-out RBI but the inning would end on a double play, setting SJSU up for the two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

The Bengals committed four errors. Clesson went the distance, pitching 6.2 innings, striking out two and only allowing two earned runs. Rayner was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one walk.

Game 2
Idaho State 7 San Jose State 4

Idaho State fell behind 1-0 after three innings but scored three runs in the top of the fourth thanks to a three-run blast by Fitzsimmons. The lead was extended to 5-1 after the top of the fifth thanks to RBIs by Blackwell and Erin Olander. The two Bengals platted Courtney Hancock and Hoffman, who reached base on a walk and a Spartan error.

San Jose State cut the Bengal lead to one run at 5-4 in the bottom half of the inning but the Bengals
sealed the win with two runs in the seventh.

Rayner pitched the first 4.1 innings, allowing four runs, two earned and striking out two while scattering five hits. Clesson pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing five hits and no runs.
