POCATELLO, Idaho- The bats were hot in the opening game of the Arizona Wildcat Invitational Friday afternoon as ISU scored 12 runs and had 11 hits to beat UC Riverside 12-9. The 12 runs scored are the most by an ISU softball team against a Division I team since the program was reinstated in 2007.
Christina Rayner set a school record with seven RBIs in the win. She had a three-run homerun and a grand slam.
Idaho State lost 8-0 to Portland State later in the evening to fall to 3-7 overall after being held to one hit.

The Bengals scored all 12 runs in the second, third and fourth innings, answering every time UCR scored runs in the top half of the inning.
Baca led the offensive attack by going 3-for-4 with one RBI, a home run and three runs scored. Rayner's school record seven RBI's off two home runs helped Idaho State answer earn the victory. Rayner was 2-for-4 while Courtney Hancock was 2-for-4.
After UCR scored two runs in the top of the second, the Bengals answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Baca led the scoring off with a lead-off home run to right field. Amanda Fitzsimmons followed with a double to center field and Rayner then walked. Erin Olander knocked Fitzsimmons and Katee Wiley singled home Rayner with one out.
The Highlanders scored three runs in the third and fourth innings and each of those innings ISU answered with four runs in the third and five in the fourth inning. Rayner hit a 3-run home run in the third inning and then knocked a grand slam in the next inning.
Clesson picked up the win by pitching the final 3.1 innings, allowing only four hits, one run and striking out one.

The Bengals managed only one hit from Katee Wiley in the game. Portland State scored its eight runs on 13 hits. Clesson suffered the loss as the Vikings scored seven runs in the first two innings.
Idaho State returns to the field Saturday to play Utah State at 11 a.m. and No. 4 Arizona at 5 p.m.
