SALT LAKE CITY, Utah- The Idaho State softball team lost 8-0 in five innings to Utah on Friday afternoon at Ute Field. The loss drops the Bengals to 6-19 while Utah improved to 17-16.
Utah scored its eight runs on eight hits while the Bengals were held hitless and committed one error.
Kandis Clesson took the loss as she pitched 3.1 innings, allowing four hits, five runs but only one earned.
Amanda Fitzsimmons tossed the final 1.1 innings.
“Utah is a great team and they took it to us,” Idaho State coach
Julie Wright said. “At some point we need to start playing to win.”
Both teams were scoreless through two innings but in the bottom of the third the Utes scored four runs and took advantage of a Bengal miscue in the field. The inning started with Tara Glover reaching base on a Bengal error then with two outs and the bases loaded Kelsi Hoopiiaina smacked a grand slam to put the Utes on the scoreboard.
Utah added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to earn the victory.
The Bengals return to the field next weekend when they begin Pacific Coast Softball Conference play at Northern Colorado on April 9-10.
