CHUBBUCK, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team took three of four games from Weber State in Pacific Coast Softball Conference play this weekend as the series concluded on Saturday by ISU winning 8-5 in game 1 and losing 1-0 in game 2.

“We continue to play well,” Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. “I was really pleased getting three out of four. It is hard sweeping a four-game series. By the fourth game the opposing pitchers figure out how to throw you and figure out every little weakness. We were in a position to win and just couldn't quite pull it off.”

The bats for the Bengals continued to roll as the team had 17 hits in the two games. Jessica Baca and Terah Blackwell each had three hits while Katee Wiley, Erin Olander, Amanda Fitzsimmons and Courtney Dial all had two hits. Baca had a team-best three RBIs on the day.

“I was proud of the way we played and really pleased with our efforts,” Wright said.

Kandis Clesson picked up her ninth win of the year in the first game, pitching a complete game, six hit, five strikeout performance. Fitzsimmons took the loss in game 2, pitching 5.1 innings, striking out four and the only run she gave up was unearned. Despite the loss, Wright said she is pleased with how Fitzsimmons continues to progress in the circle.

“Amanda continues to get better every outing,” Wright said. “She is pitching great. We just didn't get her a win today but she is pitching great.”

In the win, ISU scored six runs in the first inning, all with two outs to jump out to the big lead. The six runs in the inning were the second most runs Idaho State has scored in an inning this year. The Bengals also scored five runs in an inning with two outs on Friday.

“I love that we are scoring with two outs,” Wright said. “It shows a relentless concentrated mindset. When you can do that you are going to win more games than you are going to lose. It shows great confidence in our hitters and a never give up attitude.”

The scoring started with Blackwell walking and Christina Rayner bringing Blackwell home on a double to centerfield. Fitzsimmons then singled to right field and Baca smacked a two RBI double to left field. Dial, Wiley and Desirae Hoffman all had RBI singles in the inning to give ISU the 6-0 lead.

The Bengals then added two runs in the second to lead 8-0. Weber State scored three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to make the score 8-5.

In the final game of the series, Weber State scored its only run in the fifth inning. The Bengals had the winning run at the plate in the top of the seventh but the game ended when Olander popped out to second base.

Idaho State plays at BYU on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and then returns for the final home stand of the 2011 season on April 30 and May 1 against Seattle. Both days are doubleheaders that start at 12 p.m. on the 30th and 11 a.m. on May 1.
