POCATELLO, Idaho- Idaho State softball coach
Julie Wright tells her team to put a good swing on a good pitch and hit hard. The Bengal offense did just that and more on Saturday afternoon as the team pounded out five homeruns and 17 RBIs to sweep the first day of the double header against Seattle University, 5-4 and 12-8.
“The game plan was just to be aggressive,” Idaho State coach
Julie Wright said. “We are swinging with a lot of confidence right now.”
Leading the Bengal offensive attack was
Courtney Dial, who was 5-for-6 with three homeruns, seven RBIs, one double and four runs scored.
“This kid plays with a lot of pride,” Wright said. “She hasn't been happy with how she was hitting. She just stayed focused and within herself. I am really proud of her.”
Terah Blackwell continued her hot offensive streak by going 4-for-7 with a homerun, two RBIs and a double.
Kandis Clesson earned her 10th win of the season in the game 1, 5-4, win by pitching a complete game, six hit, three strikeout performance.
Christina Rayner earned the game 2 win by pitching 4.2 innings and allowing four hits on three runs and five strikeouts.
In the first game of the day, ISU led 3-1 after two innings thanks to a two RBI double by
Amanda Fitzsimmons in the first inning and a solo homerun by Dial in the second. Seattle took a 4-3 lead in the fourth. The Bengals tied the game at four in the sixth on a homerun by
Jessica Baca and won the game in the seventh on a walk off homerun by Blackwell. Blackwell's bomb was only the second walk off homerun in program history.
In the second game, Seattle jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the top of the second inning. The bats broke out in the bottom half of the inning as ISU scored eight runs to take a 9-5 lead. In the inning, Dial doubled and homered while
Desirae Hoffman doubled and
Erin Olander singled. Fitzsimmons, Blackwell, Baca and
Christina Rayner all reached base via the walk to help in the scoring.
The Bengals led 12-5 before Seattle scored three runs in the top of the seventh.
The four-game series continues Sunday at 11 a.m. at Capell Park. It is the final two home games of the 2011 season as seniors
Kandis Clesson,
Brittany Olsin,
Jessica Baca,
Erin Olander and
Haylee Thompson-Brock will be honored right after the first game of the day.
Notes: Before the start of Saturday's game, former Bengal pitcher Tammy Sorenson threw out the first pitch and took part in honoring
Kandis Clesson for breaking her all-time win record.
