POCATELLO, Idaho- It wasn't the way coach Julie Wright wanted to end the weekend. Despite giving up six runs in the last two innings to lose 11-10 in eight innings of the final game of the four game series, the Idaho State softball team still took three of four from Seattle after winning 10-1 in five innings in the first game of the day.

The Bengals are now 13-31 and 6-10 in Pacific Coast Softball Conference play.
“The last game was a bit of a setback but we played well,” Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. “Up until the sixth inning of the fourth game we played well. So I was really pleased with the effort.”

Once again the Bengals bats were active as they pounded out 27 hits including a school record 18 in the extra inning loss. ISU had four homeruns and 15 RBIs on the day.

“I was really pleased with Terah and Courtney Dial again and Katee Wiley also hit the ball well,” Wright said.

On the day ISU had seven different players have multiple hits, led by Terah Blackwell's 5-for-7 day with three homeruns and three RBIs. Katee Wiley and Jessica Baca each went 4-for-7 while Erin Olander was 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Courtney Dial and Brittany Olsin had three hits while Christina Rayner and Amanda Fitzsimmons each had two.

This weekend was the final home games for Olsin, Baca, Olander, Haylee Thompson-Brock and Kandis Clesson. The five seniors were honored before the start of the second game.

All five played a critical part in helping ISU take three-of-four this past weekend. In their final home series Olander hit .455, Baca .385, Olsin had one homerun, Clesson pitched 17 innings, earned two wins and struck out 12 and Thompson-Brock earned a key at bat.

“I was really proud of the way the five seniors played over the weekend,” Wright said. “They were awesome and it was special to watch.”

In the opening win, the Bengals led 8-0 after the top of the third inning thanks to a homerun by Blackwell, a triple by Fitzsimmons, a two-RBI double by Wiley a two-RBI double by Olander and a Seattle miscue.

Seattle scored its run in the bottom of the third before ISU closed the game out with a run in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the final game, Seattle jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the second inning. ISU rallied with a five run third inning thanks to another Blackwell homer. The Bengals led 10-5 going in the seventh inning when Seattle scored five runs to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning to force extra innings.

Seattle's Karina Smyth singled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

“When you are in that fourth game it is hard to sweep a team,” Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. “You have to be just a little bit better. At the end of that game our pitching wasn't just a little bit better. We gave up too many base hits.”

Idaho State closes out the 2011 season next weekend at Utah Valley University on May 6-7.
