POCATELLO, Idaho- Brittany Olsin made her last day of playing softball at Idaho State a memorable one. The Bengal senior led ISU to a split at Utah Valley on Saturday, winning 4-1 in game 2 and losing 12-7 in the first game of the day.

Olsin went 4-for-8 on the day with a triple, homerun, two RBIs, two stolen bases, scored four runs and committed no errors defensively.

“She played incredibly well,” Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. “She sells out on every single at bat, pitch and in the field. The kid was tremendous. She stole bases and just did it all on both sides of the ball.”

Olsin was one of many players that helped ISU take three-of-four at UVU, the second place team in the conference to finish 9-11 in Pacific Coast Softball Conference play while the Wolverines dropped to 12-8. UVU had been in contention to play for the PCSC title coming into this weekend.

After starting conference play 0-8, the Bengals took three-of-four from their next three conference opponents.

“To take three at UVU, who is a very good team, speaks a lot about our team,” Wright said. “This is a very good way to end the season. This was a big series for them and us. We wanted to establish ourselves as a team to be reckoned with in the future and our seniors wanted to go out on top. Our team was just relentless this weekend.”

On the day, Olsin, Terah Blackwell and Amanda Fitzsimmons all had multiple hits.

In the 4-1 win, ISU got solid pitching from Christina Rayner who went the distance, allowing six hits, one run and striking out three. It was Rayner's third win of the season.

“Rayner threw tremendous,” Wright said. “I was impressed by her efforts.

Blackwell hit her 10th homerun of the season in the game while Rayner also hit one out of the park. Six different players recorded hits in the game.

UVU scored its run in the first inning and Idaho State countered with two runs in the second and third innings. In the second inning, ISU scored thanks to RBIs from Fitzsimmons and Desirae Hoffman while in the third Blackwell and Rayner hit back-to-back homeruns.

In the first game of the day, both teams were tied at four after two innings but UVU added three in the third and two in the top of the fourth to lead 8-4. ISU got a run in the fourth and two in the sixth to make the score 12 -7.

“We hit the ball well enough to win in the first game,” Wright said. “They just beat our pitchers. We didn't give up and we kept swinging.”

Idaho State finished the 2011 season with a 16-32 record.
