POCATELLO, Idaho- The effort was there for the Idaho State women's soccer team. Unfortunately for the Bengals it wasn't quite enough as Weber State scored a goal in the 89th minute to defeat Idaho State 1-0 in the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams.
Weber State improved to 3-8 and 1-0 in conference while Idaho State dropped to 3-7-1 and 0-1 in league.
In the final minutes of the game, the Idaho State offensive attack was mounting pressure and got several good opportunities on goal but after a misfire, the Wildcats Kierstin Raught took the ball down field and dished a cross field to pass to Felicia Sorter for the game-winning goal.
“We have to push to win, that is the bottom line,” Idaho State coach
Allison Gibson said. “We needed to win the game. They keep doing the right thing and they are fighting so hard. We hit the cross bar and we give up a counter attack. That is what you risk. We have to take care of that. We have to foul at half line or do something to not put ourselves in a situation to lose with 59 seconds left. It is unfortunate. We had to push and you can't be conservative at that point. They did the right thing. They executed the game plan.”
The final stat sheet was fairly even as Weber State had 24 shots to Idaho State's 21 shots. The Wildcats had 13 shots on goal to the Bengals nine.
Carly Hutchings-Maloney had 12 saves for the Bengals.
Alishia Cairl led ISU in shot attempts with three.
In the first half, Idaho State had 11 shots to Weber State's 10.
“They played their hearts out and that is what this group does,” Gibson said.
Idaho State returns to the field on Oct. 7 for a Big Sky contest at Northern Arizona.
