POCATELLO, Idaho – Freshman Krzyzstof Stempien has been named Bengal Athlete of the Week this week for his performance against Utah State last Tuesday. Stempien helped Idaho State men's tennis earn a win over regional rival Utah State last week. The win marked the first time ISU has defeated Utah State since 2006.

In his very first collegiate doubles match, Stempien was hit in the eye with a tennis ball and was forced to play the rest of the match with basically one eye as the other was practically swollen shut. Stempien and teammate Austin Miller won the doubles match, defeating Utah State's Ballam and Wearmouth and helping ISU earn the doubles point.

Stempien then went on to play his singles match at the No. 4 position, still playing with one eye swollen shut. Stempien lost the first set to USU's Matt Sweet, but came back to win the second 7-6 and won the third 12-10.

This is Stempien's first career Bengal Athlete of the Week award as well as the first for men's tennis this season. Stempien and the rest of the Bengals take on Weber State Wednesday, Jan. 25 and Montana Friday, Jan. 27. Both matches will be held in Pocatello at the tennis courts in Reed Gym. Both matches begin at 3 p.m.
