Bengals Travel to Portland

POCATELLO, Idaho- Idaho State plays at the University of Portland on  Thursday, Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. (MST). The game will be heard live on 102.5 KMGI or 930 KSEI with Jerry Miller calling the action. Live audio and live stats can be accessed at isubengals.com.

Idaho State leads the overall series 10-9 but Portland has won the last three meetings with the most recent game being a 76-52 win by Portland in a tournament at Oregon State on Nov. 24, 2007. The Pilots and the Bengals met in home and home series in the 2004-05 and 2001-02 seasons. Portland swept the series in 2004-05 winning 82-73 in Pocatello and 67-35 in Portland. In 2001-02 ISU swept the series, winning 83-79 in overtime in Pocatello and 96-90 in Portland.

Portland, who plays in the West Coast Conference, is 0-1 after losing the season-opener at Ohio 81-52 on Nov. 10. Ryan Nicholas led the Pilots with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Portland shot 34.7 percent from the field. Portland is led by Eric Reveno as head coach, who is in his seventh season. Portland finished 7-24 last season but from 2008-11 the program won  60 games. This year Portland returns four starters and 10 lettermen.

Idaho State opened the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 10 at Utah State and lost 56-48. Melvin Morgan led ISU offensively with 19 points. He was the only Bengal in double figures. Idaho State shot 39.6 percent from the field. Tomas Sanchez had nine points, seven assists and four steals in the game. Idaho State forced 17 Aggie turnovers.

Recapping the Exhibition Wins
Idaho State beat Montana Tech 71-41 and Whitworth 68-65 in two exhibition games. Chris Hansen and Melvin Morgan led the Bengals offensively as both averaged 20 points a game. ISU shot 44.7 percent from the field and 46.8 percent from the 3-point line while scoring 69.5 points in the two games.

Morgan on the Offensive
In the 2011-12 season Melvin Morgan scored in double figures in 16 of the 30 games with a career-high of 24 points at home vs. Loyola Marymount. He also attempted 10 shots or more in 18 of the 30 games. In the season-opening game vs. Utah State he attempted 17 shots, the second most attempted in his career while scoring 19 points.

Idaho State in Home and Season Openers
The season-opening loss to Utah State was the first since in the last nine seasons that Idaho State has not opened against a team from a BCS conference.  Since the 2004-05 season, the only other time ISU has not played a BCS conference team in the season opener was in the 2008-09 season when they beat Eastern Oregon, 75-70 at home. Since the 1994-95 season Idaho State has won only four season openers with all four wins coming against non Division I teams. Last year the Bengals lost at Oklahoma, 78-74. ISU has won its last eight home openers.
