POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State men's basketball team opens Big Sky Conference play this week playing at Portland State on Thursday, Dec. 20 (8:35 p.m. MST) and at Eastern Washington (3:05 MST) on Saturday, Dec. 22. Both games can be heard live on 102.5 KMGI and 930 KSEI with

Portland State leads the overall series 27-15. Portland State swept the series last year but ISU beat the Vikings, 84-79 on Feb. 10, 2011 in Portland. Portland State is scoring 68.4 points a game and shooting .461 percent from the field while opponents are shooting .490 percent. Renado Parker leads the offensive attached at 11.9 points and 4.1 rebounds a game. Michael Harthum is scoring 11 points a game.
Eastern Washington leads the overall series, 37-27. The Eagles have won the last six meeting with the Bengals last win over EWU being a 80-74 win on Jan. 22, 2010 in Pocatello. The last time ISU won at Eastern Washington was a 65-63 victory on March 3, 2003.
The Week That Was...
In Idaho State's only game of the week, the Bengals lost 66-53 at Cal State Fullerton on Dec. 13.

Tomas Sanchez is second in the nation in the free throw shooting at .963 percent. He has made 26-27 free throws. He made 23 straight free throws until he missed his second attempt of a two shot foul late in the first half against Oregon.

The Idaho State defense ranks first in scoring defense at 60.4 points a game, third in free throw percentage at .722 and fifth in blocked shots at 3.5.
Individual Big Sky Rankings
Tomas Sanchez is eighth in assists (3.1), first in free throw percentage (.963) and fourth in steals at 1.8. Sanchez is also sixth in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at .474.
Ayibakuro Preh is eighth in blocked shots at 1.3. Sanchez and
Melvin Morgan are seventh in the conference in minutes played at 33.6.
Morgan on the Offensive
Melvin Morgan has been the team leader offensively in 2012-13 as he leads the team in scoring at 12.5 points a game. He had a season-high 19 points in the season-opener at Utah State. He leads the team in rebounding at 5.1 a game. He has scored 100 points this season and had scored in double figures in six of eight games. He had his first career double-double in the 70-52 win over Montana Western and he has attempted nine shots or more in each game this year.
Bengals in Big Sky Openers
In the last 11 years Idaho State is 6-5 in Big Sky Conference openers. During Joe O'Brien's tenure with the Bengals ISU was 4-1 in conference openers with the only loss being at Sacramento State, on Dec. 12, 2009. ISU has opened Big Sky play against Weber State twice, winning 58-55 on Jan. 4, 2007 in Ogden and winning 75-74 on Jan. 10, 2004 in Pocatello.
