Bengals Split Opening Day at UC Riverside

Idaho State plays UC Riverside at 12:30 p.m.

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team split the opening day of the aTen Construction Tournament at UC Riverside, losing 5-2 to Illinois-Chicago and beating South Dakota 6-4.

Hailey Breakwell led the Bengal attack offensively by going five-for-eight from the plate with two RBIs and a .625 average. Katee Wiley was two-for-five on the day with an RBI. Seven other Bengals had hits.

Haley Douglas earned her first win of the season by pitching 6.2 innings against South Dakota and striking out four, walking four and scattering 11 hits. In the loss to Illinois-Chicago, Amanda Fitzsimmons went six innings, allowed five hits, five runs, four walks and three strikeouts.

“UIC didn't beat us today,” Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. “We beat ourselves. When you walk hitters and compound it with mistakes you won't win. I loved the way Haley Douglas fought against South Dakota. She didn't have her best stuff but found a way to get a win. Hailey Breakwell played really well today on both sides of the ball. I was pleased with our effort.”

The Bengals scored their two runs in the first two innings and led 2-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. The first run came when Becky Simonsen reached base on an error and Vicky Galasso later drove her home with a double. In the second inning, Amanda Fitzsimmons drove home Sidney Hoskins on a sacrifice fly.

UIC then scored three in the bottom of the third and two in the fifth to take the 5-2. Breakwell went two-for-four at the plate. Idaho State had eight hits in the game.

Idaho State 6 South Dakota 4
The Bengals fell behind 3-0 after the top of the first inning.  ISU then scored in the bottom half of the inning when Simonsen scored off a fielders' choice by Gabby Lopez.  Idaho State tied it up at three in the third when Breakwell doubled home Simonsen and she later scored on a wild pitch.

Idaho State took the lead at 5-3 thanks to another two-run inning. Shaundee Garrett led off with a walk and later scored on a hit by Simonsen. She would later score on an RBI single by Breakwell.

Breakwell was three-for-four in the game with two RBIs. Idaho State had six hits in the contest.

Idaho State returns to the field on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against host school, UC Riverside.
