Bengal Softball Opens 2012 Season at Arizona State

ISU plays Oregon State on Thursday afternoon.

The Idaho State softball team plays in a tournament at Arizona State this weekend.

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team opens the 2012 season this weekend at the Kajikawa Classic at Arizona State. The Bengals open play Thursday, Feb. 9 vs. Oregon State at 2:30 p.m.

Series Info vs. Oregon state
Oregon State leads the series 10-0. The last time the two teams met was in Corvallis on March 27, 2010 where the Beavers won 8-0 and 12-2.  Oregon State finished 19-28 last year.  The Bengals have not beaten a Pac 12 team since the program was brought back in 2007. The last win over a Pac 12 team was a 2-0 win over Oregon on April 15, 1983.

Series Info vs. Bradley
Bradley leads the series 2-0.  The Braves defeated the Bengasl 4-2 and 5-4 in nine innings last year in a tournament at Fresno State.  Bradley finished the 2011 season 13-41.

Series info vs. Nebraska
Nebraska leads the series 1-0 as the Bengals dropped a 5-3 decision on Feb. 15, 2008. The Huskers are ranked No. 21 in the NFCA Preseason Top 25 poll as they finished with a 41-14 record last season. Idaho State has never beaten a team from the Big Ten Conference.

Series info vs. Washington
Washington leads the series 1-0. The win was an 11-3 victory on March 7, 2008.  Washington is ranked No. 12 in the country in the NFCA Preseason Top 25 poll. They finished 37-16 last year.

Series Info vs. New Mexico
New Mexico leads the series 5-3. This is the first meeting between the two teams since 1982.

Series info vs. Mcneese state
This is the first meeting between the two schools.

Tough Competition
The Idaho State softball team isn't backing down from tough competition. The Bengals play two ranked teams in the Preseason Top 25 polls in Washington (No. 12 in NFCA and No. 14 in the ESPN.com USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll) and Nebraska (No. 20 ESPN.com USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll and No. 21 in the NFCA Top 25 poll). The Bengals also play Ohio State, BYU, Texas Tech and UNLV who are also receiving votes in the ESPN.com poll. BYU, Texas Tech and Hawai'i are also receiving votes in the NFCA poll.  Along with the teams in the polls, Memphis, Illinois-Chicago and Portland State all earned berths to the NCAA regionals last year.  That is 13 games against teams that made regionals last year or are in the Top 40 this year.

Returning Bengals
Amanda Fitzsimmons is the team captain for this season and she leads a core of eight returning Bengals in Ashley Moeller, Katee Wiley, Christina RaynerCourtney Darby, Courtney Hancock and Terah Blackwell.
