POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team opened the 2012 season Thursday afternoon against Oregon State from the Pac 12 conference, in Tempe, Ariz. The Bengals hung with the Beavers early as they led 1-0 after the first and it was tied at two after the third inning. Oregon State then took a 6-3 lead after the fourth and scored 10 in the top of the fifth to beat Idaho State, 16-3.

Idaho State had three hits in the game, led by Amanda Fitzsimmons, one RBI, two runs and one hit. She also reached twice via a hit by pitch. Freshman Hailey Breakwell and Vicky Galasso recorded hits with Galasso coming up with an RBI. Kelsi Ott took the loss as she pitched 4.1 innings, struck out three and allowed five hits, seven walks and eight runs.

"Kelsi Ott threw very well," Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. "Oregon State never hit her hard. They just found a few holes. Galasso, Breakwell and Fitzsimmons all played very well. I was very pleased with all our freshmen. We will do a better job on the mound in relief the rest of the weekend."

In the first inning, Fitzsimmons was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. After stealing second, she later scored with two outs on a double to left field by Galasso.

Oregon State then scored two runs in the top of the third and ISU rallied in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game. Fitzsimmons was once again hit by a pitch and she later scored thanks to a Beaver miscue in the field.

After Oregon State took a 6-2 lead in the top of the fourth, Fitzsimmons had an RBI single to left field that scored Shaundee Garrett with two outs.

Oregon State then scored its 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning to seal the win.

Idaho State returns to the field on Friday at 4 p.m. vs. Bradley and 7 p.m. vs. Nebraska. These games are being played at Arizona State.
