PROVO, Utah- The Idaho State softball team had the tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh inning at BYU but the rally fell short as the Cougars defeated the Bengals 5-2 on Tuesday evening at Miller Park.

The Bengals out hit BYU 8-6 with Hailey Breakwell and Gabby Lopez each recording two hits. Lopez was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run while Breakwell was 2-for-4.

“I was pleased with the way we hit the ball,” Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. “But we needed timely hitting. That piece is still missing. We can't play a team like BYU and expect to win when we don't have timely hits.”

Kelsi Ott tossed 3.2 innings and allowed five hits and five runs while striking out two. Amanda Fitzsimmons pitched the final 2.1 innings and allowed only one hit while striking out four.

“I thought Kelsi and Amanda did a good job,” Wright said. “We were our own worst enemy with poor choices and defensive miscues. BYU is a strong opponent and is excellent preparation as we move into conference.”

The Bengals took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Lopez started the scoring with a single to right field and later scored from third on wild pitch with two outs.

BYU came back and tied the game at one with a run in the bottom of the third inning and then scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. ISU countered with a run in the top of the fifth.

With two outs Galasso singled to right center and Amanda Fitzsimmons followed with a single to right field. Lopez then platted home Galasso for the Bengals second run of the game.

Idaho State returns to the field on March 29 for its home opener at Miller Ranch Stadium vs. Utah at 4 p.m.
