Bengals Battle in Day 2; Split DH with Seattle

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball split the second-day of the four-game series against Seattle U, winning 4-2 in eight innings in game 1 and losing 5-3 in game 2. The Bengals are 1-3 in Pacific Coast Softball Conference play while Seattle improved to 3-1.

Amanda Fitzsimmons had an impressive day in the circle as she earned the win in game 1, pitching all eight innings, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs, one walk while striking out four. She also had a solid afternoon at the plate as she was 4-for-6 with one homerun, two RBIs and three runs scored.

Amanda Fitzsimmons was outstanding in the circle all weekend long,” Idaho State coach Julie Wright said.

Courtney Darby was 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored in the two games.

“I was really pleased with Courtney Darby,” Wright said. “She played free and aggressive and that was great to see.”

For the day the Bengals had 17 hits, with Vicky Galasso, Becky Simonsen and Hailey Breakwell also coming up with two hits in the two games.  Wright added that she was also pleased with the defense of Breakwell this weekend.

“She continues to play outstanding defense,” she said. “I am really impressed with what that freshman is doing in the infield.”

Despite taking the loss in game 2, Wright was pleased with how Kelsi Ott threw the ball in the circle. Ott pitched 5.2 innings and scattered seven hits, allowing five runs, while striking out seven and walking three.

Kelsi Ott showed signs of a healthy Kelsi towards the end of the game which I really liked,” Wright said. “That is the most she has pitched in a really long time. I was pleased with what she accomplished.”

Overall Wright said the performance of her team was much improved from Saturday.

“I appreciate day two way more than day one,” she said. “I thought we were more aggressive.”
For the Bengals to earn the win in game 1, they trailed 2-0 after three innings. ISU scored its first run in the fifth inning thanks to a double by Darby to start the inning. Sidney Hoskins, who pinch ran for Darby later scored on an RBI from Shaundee Garrett.

Idaho State tied the game in the seventh when Darby and Katee Wiley reached base on back-to-back singles with one out. Wiley would later score on a passed ball to tie the game at two.

The Bengals won the game in the eighth inning thanks to consecutive doubles by Galasso and Fitzsimmons with one out. Fitzsimmons double drove home Galasso and Courtney Dial brought home Fitzsimmons.
Idaho State returns to the field on Wednesday to Miller Ranch Stadium for a 4 p.m. contest vs. Boise State.
