POCATELLO, Idaho-  Two big offensive innings by the Bengals helped lead Idaho State to a doubleheader split at Weber State, winning game 1, 10-2 in five innings and losing game 2, 6-5. The Bengals are now 3-7 in conference play while Weber State is 6-4.

The Idaho State bats were hot in both games as six different Bengals had multiple hits on the day. Shaundee Garrett led the way by going three-for-6 with five RBIs while Amanda Fitzsimmons was three-for-7 with four RBIs. Vicky Galasso and Becky Simonsen each had three hits on the day while Courtney Dial had two hits and two RBIs.

Amanda Fitzsimmons earned her sixth win in the circle in game 1 as she tossed a one-hit complete game while striking out seven and walking only two.

“In game one Amanda Fitzsimmons was awesome in the circle,” Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. “She threw a one-hit gem and we smacked it around behind her. In game two we lost our concentration and gave away at bats and pitches.”

Kelsi Ott took the loss the game second game. For the day Fitzsimmons, who is now 6-8, pitched 6.1 innings and struck out nine in the two games.

The Bengals and Wildcats were scoreless through the first two innings. The Bengals then scored four runs in the top of the third to take the lead. With one out Fitzsimmons walked and Galasso followed with a single and advanced to second on the play. Gabby Lopez was hit by a pitch and Dial followed with a two RBI single to put the Bengals on top 2-0.

Katee Wiley and Garrett then had RBI singles to put ISU on top 4-0.

Idaho State had a six run inning in the top of the fifth to put the game away after WSU scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth. ISU scored its first four runs with no outs and took advantage of two Wildcat errors in the field. Lopez singled to start the inning and Dial reached base on a fielders' choice but Lopez advanced to second on the Weber State's first error of the game. Wiley followed with another fielders' choice and Weber State committed another error to load the bases with no outs.

Garrett then cleared the bases with a triple to extend the Bengal lead to 7-2.  Weber State committed another error in the inning and Fitzsimmons and Galasso and RBIs to propel ISU to the victory.

Game 2
Weber State 6 Idaho State 5

Weber State led 5-1 after two innings. ISU added another run in the third to cut its deficit to 5-2 but the Wildcats added a run in the fourth to lead 6-2 going into the fifth inning. Fitzsimmons doubled home Hailey Breakwell in the fifth inning to make the score 6-3 and the Bengals had a chance to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the sixth but a rally fell short.

ISU had the winning run on base in the top of the sixth before Weber State ended the inning. Garrett had an RBI in the inning and Dial scored on a wild pitch.

“I enjoyed the way we fought to come back and almost tie it but in the big moments we have to play like veterans and we didn't do that,” Wright said.

Wright added that she was pleased with Garrett's at bats and Haley Douglas in the circle. Douglas pitched the final 4.1 innings and allowed five hits and only one run.

The four-game series resumes Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Ogden.
