POCATELLO, Idaho-  The Idaho State softball team put on its rally caps Sunday afternoon to split a doubleheader and a four-game series at Northern Colorado. After a rally fell short in game 1 where the Bengals lost 8-6, ISU bounced back to tie the game at seven in the bottom of the seventh in game 2 and won 10-9 in eight innings.

Idaho State is now 9-33 and 5-11 in Pacific Coast Softball Conference play while Northern Colorado dropped to 21-27 and 6-10 in league.

Idaho State pounded out 24 hits on the day and .364 while the Bears had 25 hits.

“Today was one of those days in softball where we needed to win the slugfests,” Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. “Both teams hit all day. After the loss in game 1, I challenged the team to expect more from each other and wow did they respond. They never quit and I am so very proud of them.”

Sidney Hoskins led Idaho State offensively in the two games by going 4-for-6 with 1 RBI and one triple. Amanda Fitzsimmons was 4-for-7 with two triples, one homerun and five RBIs.  Becky Simonsen had four hits and scored three runs while Hailey Breakwell and Courtney Dial each had three hits. Breakwell had two RBIs and Dial had three RBIs.  Gabby Lopez and Katee Wiley each had two hits.

Amanda Fitzsimmons was 1-1 on the day as she pitched 13.1 innings and struck out 11.

In the first game, Idaho State trailed 8-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The scoring started in the bottom half of the inning when Simonsen and Lopez singled with one out. Then with two outs Vicky Galasso reached base on an error that allowed Lopez and Simonsen to score. Fitzsimmons then tripled home Galasso and Dial followed with an RBI single but the rally fell short as the Bears got out of the inning to earn the victory.

In the game 2 victory, both teams were tied at five after three innings and Northern Colorado took a 7-5 lead after the fourth.

In the fifth inning, Fitzsimmons cut the Bear lead to 7-6 on a homerun and then in the seventh ISU tied the game when Breakwell led off with double down the right side and Galasso singled her home to tie the game.

Northern Colorado scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Idaho State rallied in the bottom half of the inning as Simonsen and Lopez reached on infield singles with one out. Then with two outs Galasso walked to load the bases and Fitzsimmons tripled home the three runs for the victory.

Idaho State returns to the field on Tuesday, April 24 for a 4 p.m. contest against Utah State at Miller Ranch Stadium.
