POCATELLO, Idaho- After playing a four-game series over the weekend that turned into a slug fest at Northern Colorado, the Idaho State softball turned around won a defensive battle, beating Utah State 1-0 on Tuesday afternoon at Miller Ranch Stadium.
The Bengals are now 10-33 and Utah State dropped to 15-31. The two teams play again Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Logan.
Amanda Fitzsimmons improved her record to 9-10 as she earned the win, pitching a complete game, allowing five hits, striking out five and walking three. Utah State left eight runners on base for the game.
“Amanda didn't have her best stuff today but when she needed to she got outs,” Idaho State coach
Julie Wright said. “She went to a lot of three ball counts but she pitched great with runners in scoring position. We played great defense and was aggressive which I was happy to see.”
The Bengal offense was held to two hits, all coming in the second inning, and Utah State committed two errors in the field.
“Offensively we were just a little too passive,” Wright said. “I felt like we were in control the whole game, Amanda did a really nice job and we played well as a team. We haven't won a 1-0 ball game in a really long time and that is telling me we are maturing.”
The Bengals scored the only run of the game in the second inning. With one out,
Courtney Dial singled up the middle and
Katee Wiley doubled to left field, advancing Dial to third.
Shaundee Garrett then brought home Dial after an error was committed by the Utah State third baseman.
Utah State threatened several times through the rest of the contest but the Bengals got out of each inning with solid defense.
Following Wednesday's game at Utah State, ISU hosts Utah Valley on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29 at 12 p.m. to conclude the 2012 season. Both games start at 12 p.m. and are doubleheaders.
