POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team closes out the 2012 season this weekend on April 28-29 at Miller Ranch Stadium against Utah Valley University. Both days are doubleheaders that start at 12 p.m.
Idaho State is 10-34 and 5-11 in Pacific Coast Softball Conference play. The Bengals split a two-game series with Utah State early in the week, winning 1-0 in Pocatello and losing 2-0 in Logan.
Idaho State is led offensively by
Vicky Galasso and
Amanda Fitzsimmons. Galasso, the freshman catcher who has played and started in 43 games, is hitting .306 with four homeruns and 24 RBIs. Fitzsimmons is batting .299 with six homeruns and 33 RBIs. Fitzsimmons also leads the Bengals in the circle with a 9-11 record in 145.2 innings of work.
In conference play, Fitzsimmons is batting .408 while
Sidney Hoskins is hitting .381 and Becky Simonsen .304. ISU is hitting .275 as a team in league and Fitzsimmons is 5-4 in the circle in league games.
Fitzsimmons has broken into the single-season Top 10 for several offensive and pitching records. She currently has 130 strikeouts, which ranks her fourth and she needs four strikeouts to move into third place. In 2009
Kandis Clesson set the record with 146. Fitzsimmons 145.2 innings pitched ranks sixth and her 33 RBIs tie her for second with
Terah Blackwell, who had 33 last season.
Jessica Baca holds the single-season RBI record with 39 in 2009.
Becky Simonsen has also broken the single-season record for stolen bases with 17 and she needs four to break the career-record for stolen bases of 20, held by Emily Hu from 2008-10.
Utah Valley comes to Pocatello with a 27-20-1 record and an 8-8 mark in Pacific Coast Softball Conference play. The Wolverines are hitting .269 as a team, led by Amanda Robinson's .321 average with 10 homeruns and 34 RBIs. Jamie North is hitting .319 and Kylee Brinkerhoff, .301.
In the circle, UVU is led by Tiffany Mills with a 14-13 record, a 2.61 era and eight saves.
Utah Valley leads the overall series 18-8 but the Bengals did take three of four from UVU last year in Orem.
