EL PASO, Texas – The Bengals battled strong in their 2012 season opener taking Pac-12 foe Arizona State to five sets. Idaho State lost the match 3-2 Friday evening in the first game of the El Paso Sports Commission Invitational hosted by UTEP. Senior outside hitter
Breanne Van Every led Idaho State with a double-double consisting of 17 kills and 16 digs while redshirt freshman outside hitter
Tressa Lyman recorded her first career double-double with 17 points and 14 kills during the contest.

Jaclyn Hone-Hawkins and junior setter Lori Mendenhall also posted double-doubles in today's match. Hone-Hawkins recorded 12 kills and 15 digs while Mendenhall posted 43 assists and 14 digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Whitney Bartschi led the block effort for ISU with two solo blocks and seven assisted. The Bengals out-blocked the Sun Devils 16-12.
Redshirt sophomore defensive specialist Kylee Searle led the dig effort with 21. She also posted three assists and two service aces.
ISU came out strong in the first set, defeating ASU 25-20 and posting an impressive .323 attack percentage.
Arizona State came back in the second set defeating the Bengals 25-17 before ISU won the third set 25-22 off a .459 attack percentage.
Arizona State narrowly won the fourth set 29-27 and then went on to claim the match with a 16-14 final score in the fifth set.
"Overall, I think we played pretty well," ISU Head Coach
Chad Teichert. "It would have been great to get either set four or five but it was a good learning experience. Hopefully we can learn from it, get better and be ready for tomorrow. Anytime you take a Pac-12 school to five sets, it's a good day. It was definitely within our reach we just couldn't finish."
Arizona State improves to 1-0 on the season while the Bengals fall to 1-0. Idaho State continues play in the El Paso Sports Commission Invitational Saturday with two matches. The Bengals face UTEP at 1 p.m. before facing Fresno State at 5:30 p.m. For up-to-date stats and scores for both games visit
