ISU Battles Bakersfield Tough in Loss

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State men's basketball team lost a hard-fought 71-69 battle at Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday evening at the Icardo Center. Neither team led by more than 10 points as ISU's biggest lead was three and the Runners biggest lead was seven. There were seven ties and 13 lead changes in the contest.

"I am proud of my guys and I told them that in the locker room," Idaho State coach Bill Evans said. "We got beat tonight but I think we played hard and well. There was a tremendous effort and I am really proud."

Chris Hansen led the Bengals in scoring with 19 points and Andre Hatchett had his second-straight double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Tomas Sanchez had 14 points.

"Bakersfield is a good team and well-coached but they ran into a team who was just as tough tonight," Evans said.

Idaho State shot 39 percent from the field while Bakersfield shot 50 percent. The Bengals out rebounded the Runners 38-29 and forced 21 turnovers. ISU had 18 turnovers to 13 assists. Evann Hall had a team-high five steals. Idaho State was 18-21 from the free throw line.

Javonte Maynor led Bakersfield with 21 points, all coming from the 3-point line. Bakersfield was 10-21 from the 3-point line.

Idaho State trailed 43-36 at halftime but ISU opened the second half on a 10-1 run to take a 46-44 lead in the first five minutes. ISU's last lead of the game was 57-55 with just under eight minutes to play in the contest. Bakersfield led by as many as seven points and ISU got no closer than three points until Hansen buried a half-court shot at the buzzer to make the final score of 71-69.

Idaho State returns to the court Dec. 6 vs. Carroll College at Holt Arena. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
