POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State men's basketball team improved to 3-2 on Friday night after beating Carroll College 77-50 at Holt Arena. The 3-2 record is the best start for the Bengals since ISU started 6-1 in the 2005-06 season.
The Bengals finished with four players in double-figures, led by
Tomas Sanchez, who had 18 points and eight assists.
"I think Tomas is a good player and I thought he did a great job tonight," Idaho State coach
Bill Evans said.
Jeffrey Solarin had 16 points and 10 rebounds,
Evann Hall had 14 points off the bench and
Andre Hatchett had 10 points.
"
Evann Hall scored the ball pretty good," Evans said. "We were very unselfish tonight. We had 14 steals which is really good. I am pleased with a lot of things."
The Bengals shot 55.8 percent from the field and held Carroll College to 42.9 percent. ISU out-rebounded Carroll 30-23 and forced 18 turnovers. The Bengals had 17 assists to 12 turnovers and
Chris Hansen had four of the team's 14 steals.
The Bengals were 8-17 from the 3-point line and they made 11-16 from the free throw line.
"I thought we were inconsistent in our play," Evans said. "Some if it was really good and some of it wasn't as good. Maybe we lost focus a little bit. That is not a negative. I thought we played pretty good. We shot 56 percent from the floor and almost 50 percent from the 3-point line. I am proud of my guys. We got a win."
Carroll College hung with the Bengals early as ISU held a slim 11-9 lead with 10:35 to play in the first half. The Bengals then went on a 9-0 run to take a 20-9 lead with four minutes later after a jumper by Solarin.
"They were using a lot of shot clock early so it was hard to get in a rhythm," Sanchez said. "Once we got a few stops and easy buckets, we were able to get going from there."
ISU led 36-19 at halftime and led by 24 points at 46-22 with 13:46 to play in the game after a 3-pointer by Hansen. The Bengals biggest lead of the game was 72-41 with three minutes to play in the contest.
Idaho State returns to the court on Tuesday, December 10 when it plays at Utah from the Pac 12 conference. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
