ST. GEORGE, Utah – Idaho State played a close game with South Dakota Sunday afternoon as the Bengals dropped the contest 5-4 after SD's Christine Broders knocked one over the fence in the bottom of the seventh to give the Coyotes the win. The Bengals wrapped up play at the Red Desert Classic with a 2-3 record. Sophomore Vicki Galasso went 9-16 during the weekend. She had four homeruns, two doubles and 10 RBIs.
Idaho State opened the contest with a 3-0 lead after the first inning as Galasso hit a homerun into left field. The homer was Galasso's fourth of the season and brought in freshman
Katelyn Marquez and senior
Becky Molyneaux.
The Coyotes answered back in the second inning, scoring three off Broders' first homerun of the day.
The Bengals regained the lead in the fifth inning as Molyneaux got on base off a double to right center. A single to right field from senior Tereh Blackwell brought Molyneaux into home and put the Bengals up 4-3.
South Dakota tied it all up again 4-4 at the end of six innings.
In the top of the seventh, the Bengals had one hit and two runners on base but couldn't bring them home.
Amanda Fitzsimmons struck out SD's Kassie Loe to start the bottom of the seventh, bringing Broders up to the plate. Borders hit a solo homerun, her second of the contest, to win the game for South Dakota.
Idaho State plays again at the UNLV Tournament next weekend. The Bengals take on Nevada and Utah Friday, Feb. 15 and Oregon State and Ohio Saturday, Feb. 16. ISU wraps up the UNLV Tournament against San Jose State Sunday, Feb. 17.
