Bengal Softball Splits First Day at Santa Clara

ISU beat Cal State Northridge 4-1 and lost to San Jose State 9-1.

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team opened the first day of the Santa Clara Bronco Classic, beating Cal State Northridge, 4-1, and losing at San Jose State, 9-1, in five innings to the Spartans.

The Bengals combined for 11 hits led by freshman Katelyn Marquez, going 3-5 with two runs. Hailey Breakwell, Becky Molyneaux and Terah Blackwell all had two hits. Vicky Galasso hit her team-best sixth homerun against Northridge.

Amanda Fitzsimmons pitched 10 innings in the two games, earning the win against Cal State Northridge by pitching a complete seven-inning game, allowing only three hits, one run, one walk and two strikeouts. She tossed the final 3.2 innings against San Jose State and allowed two hits, two runs and two walks.

The Bengal defense did commit six errors in the two games, four coming against San Jose State.

“Our pitchers did a tremendous job today,” Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. “Cal State Northridge was one of the best games Fitzsimmons has thrown all year. Our defense failed us in game 2. Consistency is the key right now.”

After Northridge scored a run in the first inning the Bengals came back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and never looked back. The scoring started with Marquez getting on base with a leadoff infield single. Then with two outs, Maddy Hickman drilled a double down the right field line to bring in Marquez and Galasso, who reached base on a walk.

Galasso add a run in the third with her homerun and in the sixth Blackwell hit an RBI double that plated Molyneaux.

Idaho State scored the first run of the game in the first inning on an RBI double by Breakwell that scored Marquez. The Spartans countered the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first and sixth in the second. San Jose State won the game in the fifth inning by scoring two runs.  ISU committed two errors in the six-run San Jose State second inning scoring burst.

Bailey Foster tossed the first 1.2 innings and Fitzsimmons pitched the final 3.2

The Bengals play Fresno St at 9:30 a.m. (MST) and Santa Clara at 11:45 (MST) on Sunday to conclude play at the Santa Clara Tournament.

Notes: Terah Blackwell and Amanda Fitzsimmons are now tied for second in the ISU career record books for doubles. Both have 22 and the leader is Chris Shoemaker with 23. Blackwell has 54 career RBI and is now in fifth place all-time.
