POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State men's basketball team lost 67-58 to Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz., on Thursday evening. The Bengals led 38-35 at halftime but was limited to three field goals in the second to allow NAU pull away and earn the win.
After shooting 54 percent in the first half, ISU was held to 15 percent in the second half and 37.2 percent for the game while NAU finished the evening at 43 percent from the field.
“Our effort was good tonight,” Idaho State coach
Bill Evans said. “They all tried really hard. It just wasn't enough tonight.”
Idaho State out rebounded the Lumberjacks 40-34 but committed 17 turnovers while NAU only fumbled the ball 12 times.
“The 17 turnovers and only making three field goals hurt us tonight,” Evans said. “We had been doing a pretty good job taking care of the ball but tonight it hurt us and we didn't do that.”
Melvin Morgan led ISU with 17 points on 7-13 shooting from the field. He also had six rebounds and three assists.
Andre Hatchett had 12 points and seven rebounds,
Tomas Sanchez had 10 points and five rebounds while
Chris Hansen had nine points and seven boards.
The Bengals trailed early in the game before making a run over the final eight minutes of the first half. Trailing 29-19, ISU closed out the first period on a 19-6 run to lead 38-35 at the break. The run was sparked by seven points from Hansen and six points for Morgan.
NAU tied the game early in the second half at 41 at the 17:32 mark and the game was tied at 47 with 12:01 remaining after two
Sherrod Baldwin free throws. ISU was then held to only one field goal in the final 12 minutes as NAU pulled away for the win. NAU led by as many as nine points in the final minutes of the game three different times.
Idaho State returns to the court for its final road game of the season on Saturday, March 2 at Sacramento State at 8:05 p.m. (MST).
