POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team closed out the final day of the Long Beach State tournament with an 8-5 win over Charleston Southern on Sunday morning. The Bengals are now 7-11 on the season.
Kelsi Ott earned her first win in the circle as a Bengal by tossing the final 2.1 innings, allowing one hit, one run and striking out four.
Amanda Fitzsimmons pitched the first 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, four runs, two walks and striking out seven.
ISU scored its eight runs on 10 hits and one error in the field while Charleston Southern had five runs on seven hits and committed five errors.
Katee Wiley led the Bengal offense by going 3-4 with a homerun, three RBI and two runs scored.
Vicky Galasso was 2-4 with an RBI and Fitzsimmons was 2-4 with an RBI and one run.
Hailey Breakwell was 1-1 with a walk, RBI and one run scored while
Becky Molyneaux and
Micheala Taylor each had a hit. Taylor finished the game with two RBI.
“The offense pulled us through today,” Idaho State coach
Julie Wright said. “Charleston Southern is a good team who won 33 games last year so I was very pleased with the victory. It is great to see Kelsi healthy and able to perform at the level I always knew she could.”
The Bengals jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings with a run in the first on an RBI single from Fitzsimmons and three runs in the third inning. In the third inning, Wiley led off with a homerun to start the scoring. Breakwell and Taylor had RBI in the inning to spark the scoring.
Charleston Southern scored four runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game at four but Idaho State answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to lead 8-4.
With one out, Breakwell and
Terah Blackwell reached base via a walk and Molyneaux reached on an error. Taylor brought home the first run of the inning and Wiley followed with a two RBI single and Galasso had an RBI to round out the scoring.
The Bengals return to the field March 15-17 at Boise State. The Bengals play three games against Boise State and two against Utah State.

Amanda Fitzsimmons has tied the ISU career mark for doubles with Chris Shoemaker (1978-81) at 23 and RBI with Jessica Baca at 69.
