POCATELLO, Idaho- Amanda Fitzsimmons set the Idaho State career RBI record, tied the home run and doubles record and pitched the Bengals to a 6-4 win over Boise State in the second game of the day at the SpringHill Suites Invitational. In the first game of the day, the Bengals lost 3-2 to Utah State.
“The energy we played with all day was incredible,” Idaho State coach
Julie Wright said. “We came up short against Utah State, but played much more aggressive against Boise State. You could see that in the result.
Bailey Foster gave us great innings and that allowed Amanda to get the win. Amanda was tremendous. What she did today, the records she broke, is just who she is… a phenomenal player.”
Fitzsimmons now has 19 home runs in her career, tying her with Heather Dixon who played for ISU from 2007-08. Fitzsimmons has 73 RBI in her career, breaking Jessica Baca's record of 69 and she and teammate
Terah Blackwell both have a career-best mark of 24 doubles.
In the two games, Fitzsimmons was 4-6 with three runs, one double, two home runs and four RBI. She pitched 12 innings, earned the win against Boise State, struck out 10, allowed five runs and walked only three batters.
Katelyn Marquez was 4-7 on the afternoon with three runs scored while
Vicky Galasso was 4-8 with a home run and one run scored.
Maddy Hickman had three hits,
Courtney Dial two and
Terah Blackwell two.
As a team ISU had 20 hits and hit .333 on the day.
Idaho State 6 Boise State 4
Marquez, Fitzsimmons and Galasso combined for nine of the Bengals 12 hits. The Bengals scored at least a run in the first five innings. The scoring started with a solo homerun by Fitzsimmons to right-center field in the first inning and she followed that with a RBI double in the second inning to put ISU on top 2-0. Galasso hit her eighth homer run of the season in the third inning to extend the ISU lead to 3-0.
The Broncos put two runs on the score board in the bottom of the third but ISU came back and extended the lead to 5-2 when Fitzsimmons hit her second homer of the game, also scoring Marquez.
Boise State scored a run in the fifth in sixth inning but it wasn't enough as the Bengals got solid pitching and defense to earn the win. In the fifth inning,
Courtney Dial hit an RBI double that scored
Hailey Breakwell.
Utah State 3 Idaho State 2
The Bengals had eight hits in the game and committed two errors in the field. Fitzsimmons pitched a complete game, allowing six hits, three runs and striking out seven. Hickman was 2-3 with an RBI and Blackwell was 1-4 with an RBI.
The Bengals led 1-0 through the first three innings after a run in the first when Blackwell hit her record-breaking double to bring home Marquez, who led off with a single. ISU's run in the sixth inning came with two outs on an RBI single by Hickman that brought home Fitzsimmons.
Idaho State concludes play at Boise State on Sunday, March 17 with a 12 p.m. contest vs. Utah State and a 4 p.m. game against Boise State.
