POCATELLO, Idaho- A late rally fell short as the Southern Utah softball team won the three-game series in Cedar City, Utah vs. Idaho State by beating the Bengals 8-7 on Saturday afternoon.
Idaho State fell behind 5-1 after two innings and took a 7-6 lead in the top of the seventh inning but SUU scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to earn the win. ISU is now 13-17 and 1-2 in Big Sky Conference play.
Idaho State scored its seven runs on 10 hits and had one error in the field while SUU had its eight runs on 15 hits and one error.
Amanda Fitzsimmons led ISU offensively by going 2-4 with two RBI and two runs with a home run.
Katelyn Marquez was 2-3 and
Vicky Galasso was 2-4 with one RBI and one run.
"I thought our offense was tremendous the whole series," Idaho State coach
Julie Wright said. "We need to do a better job on the mound with our approach and consistency."
ISU trailed 5-1 going into the third but cut the T-Bird deficit to 5-3 after a hit by
Maddy Hickman resulted in a SUU error that scored Fitzsimmons and
Courtney Dial.
With SUU leading 6-3 going into the sixth inning, ISU proceeded to tie the game.
Katee Wiley started the inning off with a double to right field and
Hailey Breakwell followed with a walk. Then with two outs Wiley stole home and Fitzsimmons hit a two run homer.
Idaho State took the lead in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Hickman. In the bottom of the seventh SUU scored two runs to earn the victory.
Idaho State plays its home opener on Wednesday, April 3 vs. Utah State at Miller Ranch Stadium.
