ISU Softball Opens Play at Long Beach State Today

ISU plays North Dakota State, South Alabama, Utah, Charleston Southern and Cal State Fullerton this weekend.

POCATELLO, Idaho- After a weekend off with no games, the Idaho State softball team returns to the field to play in the Long Beach State Tournament. The Bengals face North Dakota State at 10 a.m. (MST) and South Alabama at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 8 and then play Utah (12:30 p.m.) and Cal State Fullerton (5:30 p.m.) on Saturday March 9 and the tournament concludes with a 10 a.m. contest on March 10 against Charleston Southern.  All games can be followed on isubengals.com with live stats. 

Bengals vs. Opponents
This is the first-ever meeting against South Alabama, Cal State Fullerton, North Dakota State and Charleston Southern. Utah leads the overall series against ISU 16-6 with the Bengals most recently winning, 9-8 in Las Vegas on Feb. 15.

Molyneaux Breaks Career Stolen Base Record
Idaho State senior Becky Molyneaux broke the career stolen base record during the season-opening tournament in St. George. Molyneaux was three-for-three over the weekend and now has 26 stolen bases on 30 attempts since the start of the 2012 season. Emily Hu previously held the record with 20 on 22 attempts.  Through the first 14 games, Molyneaux is a perfect 7-7 stealing bases

Bengals Earn Big Sky Player of the Week Honors
Vicky Galasso had an impressive opening weekend as the sophomore catcher hit .563 with four homeruns and 10 RBI while going nine-for-16 from the plate. Galasso also had a 1.438 slugging percentage. The four homeruns hit during the opening weekend topped her mark from 2012 where she hit three. Galasso's numbers earned her Big Sky Player of the Week and Bengal Athlete of the Week honors.

Senior Amanda Fitzsimmons earned the honor this week for hitting .429 with three homeruns and eight RBI in Las Vegas. Fizsimmons set a single-game school record when she hit three homeruns and had six RBI in a 9-8 win over Utah from the Pac 12. ISU also defeated Nevada 9-6.

Freshman Katelyn Marquez earned the honor the third week of the season. Marquez hit 7-for-13 (.538) in four games with three runs, one double, one RBI and had four stolen bases in the Santa Clara Classic.

Improved Play in 2013

Offensive Power
Through the first three weekends, Idaho State has hit 17 homeruns in 14 games and hitting .316 as a team. ISU hit 21 homeruns in 2012 and the team record is 35 hit by the 2011 team. The best team batting average was .286 in the 2009 season and .284 in 2010.

Fitzsimmons Nearing ISU Career Records
Amanda Fitzsimmons is about to break several career Idaho State records. She has 22 doubles and is two away from breaking Chris Shoemaker's record of 23 from 1978-81.  Terah Blackwell also has 22 doubles. She has 17 homeruns  and the career record is 19. The Bengal senior is only two RBI away from becoming the all-time leader as she has 68 and the record is 69. Ftizsimmons also has scored 61 runs, which ranks sixth and her 94 hits ranks fourth all-time. Megan Miller holds the record with 151 from 2007-10.
