POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team rallied from a three-run deficit with five runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Utah Valley University 8-6 on Wednesday afternoon in Orem, Utah. The Bengals are now 17-18 heading into their conference match up this weekend at Northern Colorado.
Idaho State scored its eight runs on seven hits while committing three errors in the field and UVU had its six runs on eight hits and committed four errors.
Maddy Hickman was 2-4 with four RBI with one run and one double while
Becky Molyneaux was 2-4 with one RBI.
Vicky Galasso was 1-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Haley Douglas earned her first win of the season by pitching the final two innings, allowing no hits.
“Sometimes this team just flat-out surprises me,” Idaho State coach
Julie Wright said. “We found a way to get it done and grind out the win.
Haley Douglas was clutch with her effort on the mound.”
Trailing 6-3 going into the final stanza, the Bengals scored all five runs with no outs.
Amanda Fitzsimmons started the inning off with a single to right field and
Gabby Lopez walked and Galasso singled home Fitzsimmons for the first run of the inning.
Terah Blackwell then walked and Hickman reached on a two-RBI double to left field to tie the game at six. The final two runs of the inning came on an RBI single from Molyneaux and Hickman scored on a passed ball.
Thanks to a double play by the Bengal defense in the bottom of the seventh inning ISU was able to seal the victory.
Idaho State led 3-1 after the third inning but the Wolverines responded with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the 6-3 lead.
Idaho State returns to the field on April 13-14 for three games at Northern Colorado. Both days begin at 1 p.m. The two teams play a double header on April 13.
