Bengals Beat Utah State, 3-2

POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team had only three hits but it was just enough to beat Utah State, 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon in Logan, Utah. The Bengals are 23-19 overall heading into their conference home series this weekend vs. North Dakota.

Vicky Galasso, Katelyn Marquez and Courtney Dial had the three hits for the Bengals. All three came in the final two innings.

Bailey Foster earned the win in the circle, pitching three innings and allowing four hits. Haley Douglas pitched two innings, striking out one and allowing two hits and one run. Kelsi Ott tossed the final two innings, striking out three, allowing three hits and one run.

“Our pitching staff did an excellent job,” Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. “I'm very proud of their effort. It was a grind it out type win and after the emotions of such a big weekend, I was really pleased.”

The Bengals took a 1-0 lead after the first inning. ISU loaded the bases when Amanda Fitzsimmons was hit by a pitch, Becky Molyneaux walked and Terah Blackwell was hit by a pitch. Then on a fly out to center field, Utah State committed an error that allowed Fitzsimmons to score the first run of the game.

Idaho State maintained its 1-0 lead through the first four innings. Utah State tied the game at one in the fifth inning but the Bengals rallied back for a run in the sixth and seventh inning to take a 3-1 lead going to the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the sixth inning, Galasso extended her hitting streak to 23 games with a one-out triple and she would score on a sacrifice by Blackwell. Dial doubled home Marquez, who reached on a single, for the final ISU run.

the bottom of the seventh, the Aggies had the winning run on base with one out but Ott struck out one batter and forced the final USU batter into a ground out.

Idaho State returns to Big Sky Conference play on Friday, April 26 and Saturday April 27 vs. North Dakota at Miller Ranch Stadium. Friday's , double header starts at 2 p.m. and the single-game on April 27 starts at 1 p.m.
