POCATELLO, Idaho - Sophomore midfielder Whitney Peterson scored a lone goal in the 58th minute to lift Idaho State the 1-0 win over Eastern Washington in the first match of the 2013 Big Sky slate.

Peterson's goal came on a centering pass from Kiley Godfrey that found Lauren Bermudez on front of the goal. Bermudez was tightly guarded by a defender but she found Peterson open, Peterson sent the ball to the left corner of the goal for the game winner.

Idaho State (4-5, 1-0 BSC) outshot Eastern Washington (2-8, 0-1 BSC) 12-10 and in shots on goal 5-4. Both goalkeepers played a strong defensive match.

EWU's Nathalie Schewery tallied four saves in five shots on goal. She also notched two shots when the Eagles utilized her strong leg on free kicks in the second half.

Goalkeeper Sheridan Hapsic tallied her second straight shutout including 192 minutes of scoreless soccer over two matches. She has not allowed a goal since sitting out the Florida Gulf Coast match at the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic in Honolulu.

"We sat her against FGCU and that might have been the best thing for her," Head Coach Allison Gibson said. "It really gave her the opportunity to let the pressure off and step back to let her refocus. She was letting some outside distractions affect her game and now it seems like she is back to her old self and I couldn't be happier."

The Bengals continue Big Sky play Saturday at 1 p.m. against Montana in a re-match of the 2012 conference championship match which was also played at Davis Field.

The Griz lost to Weber State 2-0 in Ogden Thursday.
