POCATELLO, Idaho - The Idaho State Bengals fell 4-2 to the Utah Valley Wolverines in the first ever soccer match played in Holt Arena Tuesday night.
The match was scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Davis Field but was delayed because of lightning. After an hour and a half delay the determination was made to play the match at Holt Arena. Temporary goals were brought in and lines were tapped onto the field turf to meet regulations.
The match started as a stalemate with no team gaining a big advantage until the 39th minute when Utah Valley's Sheridan Fox emerged from a scrum to score from six yards out.
Just under four minutes later UVU's Katelyn McLeod sent a cross into the box where Taylor Kirk sent a header into the goal.
The Wolverines held that 2-0 lead into the break.
After the half Idaho State put on the pressure, Allyson Stainbrook was fouled in the box in the 60th minute and her Penalty Kick low to the right corner rang true to cut the deficit to 2-1.
In the 76th minute Kirk received the benefit of a pass from Natalie Baker and sent a header into the back of the net.
In the 83rd minute Mikaela Carrillo received her second yellow card of the game which forced the Bengals to play with 10 on the field for the remainder of the match.
Despite playing a man-down the Bengals did not accept defeat. In the 85th minute Stainbrook sent a free kick past the Wolverine keeper to again cut the advantage to one.
The Wolverines finished the scoring in the 89th minute when Haley Curtis found herself wide open and sent a 25-yard shot into the top left corner of the goal.
The match is the first home loss since the 2011 season for Idaho State and moves the Bengals 2-2 on the season. Utah Valley moves to 1-3 on the season.
The Bengals will look to get back on track Saturday at 12 p.m. at Davis Field when Idaho State will face Utah State.
