UNC stuns ISU with Last Second Winner

By Matt Gittins, ISU Sports Information

POCATELLO, Idaho – A last second winner from Northern Colorado led the visitors to a 2-1 victory over Idaho State, Sunday afternoon at Davis Field.

Essence Ortiz-Laneir collected a pass just outside of the six yard box and flicked the ball into the back of the net with just 10 seconds remaining to give the Bears the road victory.

"I just told them that this is the Ying and Yang of soccer," Head Coach Allison Gibson said. "Sometimes you are going to be on the winning end of that and sometimes you find yourself on the losing end. If you're in the game long enough you are going to see it swing in both directions. It's going to happen like that sometimes."

Idaho State struck first in the 52nd minute.  Amanda Ellsworth and Maria Sanchez possessed the ball through multiple defenders before eventually finding Whitney Peterson on a run.  Peterson fired a ball over the keeper's shoulder and into the back of the net for her first goal of the season and the 1-0 lead.

UNC would respond just seven minutes later, finding the equalizer on a headed ball crossed in from the wing.  The match remained tied at one all the way until the waning moments when the Bears found the stunning winner.

"You can't put too much weight into one game, even if you win," Gibson said. "In this conference it always comes down to the last week of the season. I told them you have to get rid of the feeling of this game. It's unfortunate, but we have to try to get back at it and stay in the race as much as possible."

The Bengals continue their home stretch Friday October 10th against Portland State. ISU will welcome the Vikings to Davis Field at 4 p.m.
