CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Idaho State volleyball team continued to roll through Big Sky Conference play defeating Southern Utah 3-1 (25-20, 25-27, 25-18 and 25-21) Saturday night at Centrum Arena.
The Bengals have won seven straight matches and 14 out of the last 15. They hold a two-match lead over the closest team in the conference with just four matches left in the regular season. The team with the best record hosts the Big Sky tournament.
The 11-1 start to conference play is the best mark since the 1990 team won 14 of their first 15 games.
"It's a lot of fun but even more than that deeply satisfying," Teichert said of the team's hot start. "We can't be content with just winning the regular season and hosting the tournament. We have to want to be getting better each week."
ISU hit .281 as a team led by
Tressa Lyman's 18 kills. The Bengals are 13-0 in matches this season when their attack percentage is over .198.
"The girls are working really hard and we have great kids," Head Coach
Chad Teichert said. "Tonight was so impressive because we did it without
Kylee Sessions who is a very, very good libero.
Alydia Fields-Grimm did a great job stepping in for her. That's not an easy thing to do and she did a good job of it.
Fields-Grimm had 13 digs and four assists as the Bengals' libero.
Makenzie Filer (14) and
Whitney Bartschi-Harrington (8) each collected a kill on 50 percent of their attacks while
Hayley Farrer posted her 12th double-double of the season with 47 assists and 14 digs.
ISU returns to Pocatello for a pair of home matches next week. The Bengals will host Portland State on Thursday before welcoming Sacramento State on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. on the ICCU Court inside Reed Gym.
