DENVER, Colorado – Strong second half defense from the University of Denver helped the Pioneers pull away for a 54-38 win over Idaho State Sunday afternoon at Magness Arena.
The Bengals shot 58.8% in the first half led the game 29-28 with under a minute left before a late Denver three gave the home team the two-point half-time advantage they would never relinquish.
DU limited ISU to just 18.2% (4-22) from the field and nine points in the second half. Despite the offensive struggles a
Jeffrey Solarin basket with 8:48 left cut the deficit to just five but Idaho State would not score the rest of the game and drop to 0-2 on the season.
Chris Hansen led ISU with 15 points,
Nnamdi Ezenwa had eight and Solarin had seven points and 14 rebounds.Â
"The ball just wouldn't go in," Hansen said. "We also turned it over too many times."
The Bengals travel to Pullman, Washington to take on Washington State next Friday November 21 before returning to Pocatello for three consecutive home games.Â
"We just need to keep our heads up and go back to the drawing board and learn from this," Hansen said.
