Strength Inside: Bengals Use Size to Dominate 'Yotes

By Matt Gittins, ISU Sports Information

POCATELLO, Idaho – Grace Keyon flirted with the second triple-double in school history as the Idaho State women's basketball team defeated the College of Idaho 81-48 Monday night on the Idaho Central Credit Union Court inside Reed Gym.

The redshirt freshman collected 15 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high eight assists for her second double-double of the season.  Lori Heeter is the only player in ISU history to record a triple-double when she accomplished the feat in the early 1990's.

"Passing the ball is one of my favorite things to do," Kenyon said. "It is really developing into part of my game."

"She has really developed her guard skills and outside shooting. She has put a lot of time into it," Head Coach Seton Sobolewski said. "She is making an effort to limit the turnovers."

The visitors jumped out to an early 17-6 lead, connecting on seven of their first eight shots.  The Idaho State defense would limit the 'Yotes to just 11-52 from the field over the rest of the game.

"I think it was more of what was going right for them," Sobolewski said of the early deficit. "They had people making shots they don't normally make.  You have to give them credit because they came out fired up. We did a good job of slowly adjusting."

The Bengals used a 15-0 run to take a five-point halftime lead and then outscored the College of Idaho 46-18 in the second half to pull away.

"It's a great win because we were able to overcome the slow start," Kenyon said. "Everybody got minutes and everybody improved. I think that is the win from the game."

The Bengals dominated the 'Yotes inside collecting a season high 60 rebounds to just 31 for the visitors, including a 23-9 advantage on the offensive glass.  ISU outscored CI 48-12 in the paint and held a 29-4 advantage in second-chance points.

"We tried to get the ball in the post. I thought Anna Lee Policicchio (19 points and 10 rebounds) did a fantastic job of doing that by positioning herself inside for some easy baskets," Sobolewski said.

Policicchio also blocked three shots.  She has collected at least one block in eight consecutive games and has had multiple rejections in five of the last seven.

Lindsay Brown notched a career-high nine points and 14 rebounds off the bench as the Bengals concluded their non-conference schedule with a 5-6 record.

"I think we are mentally prepared for Big Sky play," Brown said. "This was a good game to get us ready. These (conference) games are going to be tough."

"I think we have improved in a lot of areas," Sobolewski said. "Our free throw shooting is getting better. Hopefully we keep growing in terms of confidence and understanding our weaknesses."

Idaho State will welcome the University of Idaho to the ICCU Court at Reed Gym to open Big Sky Conference play this Thursday at 7:00 p.m.  The Bengals will continue the home-stand Saturday when they host Eastern Washington at 2:00.
