Last Second Shot Lifts NAU to 67-65 Win over ISU

POCATELLO, Idaho- Kris Yanku scored a basket with three seconds left in regulation to lift Northern Arizona to a 67-65 victory over Idaho State on Saturday afternoon at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz.  The loss drops ISU to 7-12 and 4-6 in Big Sky Conference play while NAU improved to 9-12 and 6-4 in league.

The Bengals led for the first 29 minutes of the game and held a 47-37 lead with 16:42 left in the game following a 3-pointer by Tomas Sanchez. ISU was held scoreless for the next five minutes and NAU went on a 20-5 run in an eight-minute span to take a 57-52 lead with 8:12 to play. Both teams traded leads in the final minutes before NAU scored its game-winning bucket.

In the final minute of the game a put back by Jeffrey Solarin tied the game at 65 with 32 seconds left. NAU's Yanku scored with three seconds remaining and the Bengals were unable to get a good shot following the bucket.

"The kids played hard but their full-court pressure really hurt us," Idaho State coach Bill Evans said. "They were able to capitalize on that."

Idaho State shot 45.3 percent for the game and NAU shot 44.4 percent. The Bengals hit 11 of 14 free throws and NAU was 11-of-16 from the free throw line. The Bengals hit six 3-pointers while NAU was 8-for-22.

Idaho State did out rebound the Lumberjacks 35-29 but had 14 turnovers to only 10 for NAU. Chris Hansen scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds. Andre Hatchett had 14 points and Sanchez added 11.

Idaho State led by as many as seven points at four different times in the first half.  ISU led 37-30 at halftime and Hansen led the Bengals with 14 points.

Idaho State returns to the court next week at ICCU Court in Holt Arena when it hosts Northern Colorado on Thursday, February 6, and North Dakota on Saturday, February 8. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
