ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Idaho State Bengals lost 7-4 to North Dakota State and 11-10 to New Mexico on the opening day of the New Mexico Invitational Friday.
Vicky Galasso had four RBIs on four hits in the two games to lead ISU.
Katee Wiley was 3-5 for 3 RBIs on the day.
Hailey Dougles (3-5) recorded both losses for Idaho State.
North Dakota State 7, Idaho State 4
ISU scored three runs in the top of the seventh but left the bases loaded and fell to North Dakota State 7-4.
The Bison scored three runs in the first inning and four in the second to build a 7-0 lead.
The Bengals trailed 7-0 until the top of the fourth inning when
Terah Blackwell hit a solo homerun to center field to cut the NDSU lead to 7-1.
Idaho State did not score again until the top of the seventh inning.
Katelyn Marquez was walked with the bases loaded to score
Micheala Taylor. Galasso single down the left field line in the next at-bat, scoring Wiley and
Kacie Burnett.
Blackwell was hit by a pitch to again load the bases but the Bison were able to get out of the jam and earn the victory.
Galasso led the Bengals with two RBIs and Burnett, Hickman and Wiley had two hits.
Tabby Bayers (2-3) recorded the win for North Dakota State. She allowed seven hits and four earned runs in six innings.
Douglas received the loss for Idaho State. She allowed eight hits and six runs in 1.2 innings.
Bailey Foster allowed three hits and one run in 4.1 innings.
New Mexico 11, Idaho State 10
New Mexico scored a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Idaho State answered in a big way in the bottom of the third inning.
The Bengals scored on four consecutive at-bats to take the lead. Galasso singled to left to score
Sarah Hayes from third base and on the next at-bat Blackwell reached on an error to score Burnett. Marquez scored on a sacrifice fly by
Dara Kolar. Wiley followed with another sacrifice fly, this time scoring Galasso.
The Lobos scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning but the Bengals again answered with a big inning of their own.
Burnett scored when Galasso doubled down the right field line. Lopez scored on a sac-fly by Blackwell and Wiley doubled to score Kolar and Galasso to give the Bengals a 9-3 lead.
The Lobos answered with a run in the fifth inning and three in the sixth to cut the ISU lead to 9-7.
The Bengals extended their lead to 10-7 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Breakwell reached on an error and Blackwell scored.
The Lobos needed three runs in the top of the seventh to extend the game and they got four to take an 11-10 lead.
Idaho State had one more opportunity to respond but the Bengals were put out in order to end the game.
Wiley had three RBIs to lead the Bengals and Galasso tallied two RBIs for ISU.
The Bengals are 6-7 and play Buffalo at 10 a.m. tomorrow and North Dakota State at 12 p.m.
