ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Idaho State Bengal offense put 16 runs on the board, including a grand slam home run by
Katelyn Marquez, en route to a 16-7 win over Buffalo, Saturday morning, at the New Mexico Invitational in Albuquerque.
The Bengals started the game off with a boom when
Terah Blackwell homered to right-center, scoring
Vicky Galasso, in the top of the first inning.
With the bases loaded in the top of the second, Marquez connected on her first career home run to give ISU a 6-0 lead.
"Katelyn's grand slam was a special moment," Head Coach
Julie Wright said. "That was a direct result of her hard work and attention to detail."
Idaho State added another run in the second when
Maddy Hickman singled to right field scoring
Vicky Galasso to give the Bengals a 7-0 lead.
The Bulls scored one in the third inning and three in the fourth to cut the Bengal lead to 7-4.
The Bengals weren't finished with their offense. With Marquez on third in the top of the fourth, Galasso homered to left field to push the lead to 9-4.
Blackwell doubled in the next at-bat and scored two batters later when Breakwell doubled to give the Bengals a 10-4 advantage. Three batters later
Micheala Taylor singled to first base to score Breakwell and extend the lead to 11-4.
The Bengals added four more runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 16-4.
Buffalo scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth but it wasn't enough to extend the game and the Bengals held on to win, 16-7.
"The offense continues to do their part," Wright said. "I was impressed with freshman
Sarah Hayes and how she performed in multiple positions and at the plate.
Micheala Taylor and
Hailey Breakwell also had great days. Galasso and Blackwell continue to do their job."
Seven ISU players tallied RBIs, led by Marquez with four on two hits. Galasso and Blackwell had three RBIs each.
Hailey Douglas (4-5) was awarded the win. She allowed four runs in 3.2 innings.
The Bengals are 7-7 on the season. ISU was scheduled to play against North Dakota State Saturday afternoon but the game was cancelled.
To make up the missed the game ISU will play another game with Buffalo at 10 A.M.
Idaho State plays New Mexico, Sunday, at 12 p.m. in the final game of the New Mexico Invitational.
