PORTLAND, Ore. – The Idaho State softball team split a pair of games with Portland State Saturday afternoon at Erv Lind Stadium. Idaho State won the first game, 2-1, and lost the second, 10-2, in six innings.
Idaho State 2, Portland State 1
Gabby Lopez had only one at-bat, but she made it count. The junior pinch-hit in the fifth inning with two-runners on base and the Bengals trailing 1-0. She sent the pitch into center field for a double scoring
Hailey Breakwell and
Katee Wiley.
The two runs would be all ISU needed to earn the 2-1 win.
The Bengal defense was stellar in support of starting pitcher
Haley Douglas. Idaho State had just one error and made big plays with their gloves including a catch at the wall by
Kacie Burnett early in the game and a diving catch in the seventh inning by
Hailey Breakwell.
Douglas (10-6) allowed four hits and walked one in the complete game win.
ISU had six hits led by Breakwell and Wiley with two each.
Portland State 10, Idaho State 2 (6)
Portland State exploded for four runs in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth to defeat ISU 10-2.
The Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead with runs in the second and fourth innings before the Bengals got on the board with another Lopez double that scored Breakwell in the fifth inning.
Portland State answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 6-1.
In the top of the sixth
Vicky Galasso scored on a sacrifice fly from Breakwell to cut the deficit to 6-2.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning Brittany Hendrickson homered to right center to give PSU a 10-2 lead and secure the win on the run rule.
Idaho State moves to 16-11 (1-1 BSC) and Portland State is 4-20 overall (1-1 BSC). The final game of the series takes place tomorrow at 1 p.m. (MDT).
