PORTLAND –The Idaho State offense exploded for seven runs on 12 hits including home runs by
Vicky Galasso and
Terah Blackwell to beat Portland State 7-4 in the final game of the Big Sky Conference opening series Sunday afternoon.
"Terah played like the veteran she is and
Micheala Taylor was outstanding on both sides of the ball," Wright said. "Today we figured out what pressure is and we mastered it."
The Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Bengals answered in the third when
Katee Wiley scored on a single down the right field line by
Micheala Taylor.
After Portland State added another run in the third inning, ISU took the lead for good in the fourth.
Galasso tallied her 11th home run of the season with a two-run blast to left field, scoring
Sarah Hayes.
Kacie Burnett singled to right in the next at bat and advanced to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch. Burnett later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Maddy Hickman to give ISU a 4-3 lead.
Hailey Breakwell extended the Bengal lead to 6-3 in the fifth inning on a two-run homer to center field, scoring
Gabby Lopez.
Breakwell gave ISU a 7-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning on a single to left, allowing Wiley to score on the play.
The Vikings cut into the ISU advantage with a solo home run by Brittany Hendrickson in the bottom of the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Bailey Foster replaced
Haley Douglas in the circle after she walked Shae Nelson.
Foster forced the next Viking batter to fly out and Galasso ended the game when she picked off Nelson at first.
Douglas (11-6) earned her second win of the weekend. She allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out three.
"It was a great effort from
Haley Douglas," Wright said. "She gets better every outing."
Foster earned her first career save.
The Bengals are 17-11 on the season and 2-1 in Big Sky play.
ISU plays its next eight games in the state of Utah. The Bengals play at Utah Valley on Tuesday, Utah on Wednesday, and BYU on Friday and Saturday.
