SALT LAKE CITY, Utah- Hailey Breakwell and
Vicky Galasso combined for six of the Idaho State softball team's 10 hits but the offense wasn't enough as Utah hit a walk off home run in the bottom of the seventh to earn the 8-6 win on Wednesday evening at the Utah Softball Stadium.
The Bengals trailed 6-0 after four innings before scoring two in the fifth and four in the sixth to tie the game.
Breakwell hit a two-run home run over the left field fence in the fifth. It was her second home run in two days.
"She is getting hot," Idaho State coach
Julie Wright said. "The one thing about Breakwell is when she gets her barrel there she is unbelievably strong. She is just starting to feel it. It is exciting because when she gets hot she is hot for long periods of time. It is nice to see her swinging the bat aggressively."
In the sixth inning,
Micheala Taylor led off with an infield single and
Kacie Burnett followed with a triple to center field to cut the Ute lead to 6-3.
Terah Blackwell then brought home Burnett on a double to right field.
"It is the same story it always is," Wright said. "We fight and we don't quit. If we have an out we have a chance. That is our mentality.
Terah Blackwell continues to swing the bat well. I was really pleased with our effort offensively."
With one-out, Galasso sent a home run over the scoreboard in left-center to tie the game at six.
"It was great to see Vicky swing the bat well today," Wright said. "That was a monster home run over the scoreboard. She hit the ball hard all day. Vicky is trying to figure out how to play with the expectation of being a Top 50 player. That's been a struggle a little bit. It was great to see her get her mind right and swing the bat well."
Utah took advantage of an ISU miscue to start the bottom of the seventh inning, setting up Bridget Castro's walk off home run.
Galasso was three-for-three with two RBIs and two runs scored. Breakwell was three-for-three with two RBIs and one run scored. The ISU offense had 10 hits but committed two errors in the field.
Haley Douglas took the loss. In 6.1 innings she allowed seven hits, struck out two and walked four. Utah got all seven hits in the first, fourth and seventh innings.
"I thought
Haley Douglas did a good job," Wright said. "This is a good hitting club. What Haley showed is that she is a good pitcher. Defensively we didn't play very well. We had some big errors and situations where we could have controlled things and we didn't."
Idaho State plays a three-game series at BYU on March 28-29. ISU plays at single-game at 6 p.m. on March 28 and a double-header starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 29.
